The Life and Ideas of the Marquis de Sade by Geoffrey Gorer Erotica Vintage Book. The Marquis de Sade (1740-1814) is undoubtedly one of the most original and courageous thinkers of any era. He expressed his views in a number of forms, but principally in a series of "philosophical novels" which portray the corruption of power and the gratification of all normally unconscious wishes. With a clear-sighted and analytical approach, de Sade discussed sexual psychology and philosophical and political problems, making thereby a unique contribution towards our knowledge of human behavior.

Geoffrey Gorer has presented a succinct account of one of the strangest lives ever lived, and a careful analysis of ideas whose influence has been great and continues to grow.

Geoffrey Gorer was educated at Charterhouse and Jesus College, Cambridge, and later studied at the Sorbonne and the University of Berlin. In addition to the present volume, two other books by Mr. Gorer are published in the Norton Library: Africa Dances (N173) and The People of Great Russia (with John Rickman) (N112).
